| Few major changes |
| |
1) Officers will no longer be called officers. We will
change it to ¡°Servant Leaders¡±. I believe that God has called
each one of us to serve. Being a servant leader is to remind
that Christ came to serve, and not to be served. Just the
title of being an officer hints some major pride and arrogance
in young and old people's minds.
2) Starting from upcoming
year, no one in praise team will be able to serve as servant
leaders and vice versa. This will help everyone to give more
attention to their own responsibilities. No more overlapping.
3) Each committee will have a supervisor
(one of the teachers) and a committee leader. The supervisor's
job is not to direct what to do but simply make sure that
all the responsibilities are being taken care of. Committee
leaders will actually plan and execute all the responsibilities
together with the members. The committee leaders will be
part of servant leaders. During election, we will be electing
class representatives. The old format of presidency is no
longer valid. Each class representative will act as a coordinator
for each class. They will be responsible for contacting members
of each class, meditating suggestions, and representing that
class during meetings. This role is almost like a small scale
pastoral role. Class representative will be serving the class
and their needs. |

| Youth Group Vision |
| |
My vision for the group is that the next generation
of students will find their identity through Christ and in
Christ alone. We are Koreans by the blood that we have received.
We are also Americans by the cultural influences of this
society. Most of us are also Christians by faith and religion.
By combining these simple facts in significantly different
order, we can be many different things at once. However,
more than anything, we are Christians above all. The vision
that I have for the students are to see that they find true
identity and meaning in what God has to in store for them.
Some of us can identify ourselves as Korean-American Christians. This statement
implies that our cultural heritage has more significance when defining the
center of our belief system. Our cultural values override even the Christian
values due to powerful identification as Koreans. Many will try to implement
this even in churches by insisting on Korean ¡°style¡± of Christianity. Whatever
the Korean have done as part of their Christian faith is imposed on the younger
generations as well. This might even be the case of cultural and generation
gap. Too strong of emphasis on cultural values can disregard the Christian
values.
Some of us might identify ourselves as American-Korean Christians. This statement
makes it clear that once again the cultural values are the center of one's
faith identity. ¡°I am an American, therefore, I must be Christian according
to the American way¡±. What is American way of Christian living anyway? What
is Korean way of Christian living? Both statements of identification rule out
the most important factor of developing healthy sense of Christian values.
We are Christians. We are not Korean-American Christians neither are we American-Korean
Christians. We are simply Christians who are Koreans living in American society.
The cultural backgrounds can influence and shape our values. It is inevitable.
However, those things do not mark our identity. God is beyond culture, race,
age, gender, class and sexual orientations. Our identification is that with
Christ. Christ was not just a Jewish carpenter who was teaching the values
of Jewish society and customs. He was not teaching even the laws of that particular
society. He gives new insight into living. He gave us a new commandment. His
new command is this: Love one another as I have loved you so that the world
may know that you are my disciples. (John 13:34)
What is my vision for the group?
It's simple as the
new command of Jesus:
|
| |
|
1. To find God ? through biblical studies,
activities (retreats, revivals, seminars, fellowship events,
etc)
2. To seek God ? through a personal relationship God by the means of prayer
and meditation through out one's life
3. To be transformed by God ? by the means of active obedience
4. To share God and offer God (in love and in truth) ? through the love that
was shown through Christ Jesus |
| |
|
|
- to love each other deeply through prayer, encouragement,
and being family-minded of brotherhood and sisterhood
- to love and to forgive
- to give until it hurts
- to sacrifice one's life for another
|
| |
Our vision is not to become Korean Community
Church, but a church where even the denominational separation
is submitted under the love of God. Our vision is to become
that church in which God is at the center of our consciousness.
It's not about being Koreans, Americans, or both. It's all
about being God's children. Who are we? We are God's children.
We are Christians who are united with Christ through the will
and the mind.
The vision of the 2nd generation ministry cannot be based on the assumption that
we are just a Korean-American Church. We are simply the church of Christ. Our
youth group must be integrated and not be separated by race and culture. Our
youth group must be soaked in the love of Christ moving beyond our comfort zones.
Our youth group must move beyond hopes of becoming just Korean-Americans, but
Christians. |
